June, 30 2009 HPU Update
Hi Team, It's a little more than two months until the Wellington Champs (5-6 and 12-13 September) and 3 months until the New Zealand Spring meet (possibly to be re-named the NZ Winter Nationals again). As you know these will be our seasonal peak meets, and I am looking forward to seeing you all racing again after this extended phase of training. If you refer to our yearly competition sheet you will see that there are two preparation meets that I would like you all to enter. these are to give you the competition practice that is necessary to familiarize your minds and bodies with all the intricate processes involved with competition, especially those that you don't quite get at training. The first meet is the WGTN Distance meet on the 18th July. Yes, I would like you all to enter this meet even you sprinters! This meet will show me how good your endurance is (essential for the 100m and above events that you all do), and it will be a good meet for you to do some (for most) non-specific racing while as a team we toughen up before targeting your individually preferred strokes and distances. The following meet is the Upper Hutt meet on the 15th August, this will be an opportunity for you to practice your specific events prior to the WGTN Champs. Please notify me if you cannot make one of these two meets. Team HPU goals from me are that you all produce multiple PB performances this season, and that all swimmers reach the 700 FINA point HPU standard. Make sure that you memorize exactly what your goal FINA point times are. Samantha Lee and Ellen Quirke will be joining the NZ Trans Tasman team this weekend. We wish you both the very best for your racing. As usual my advice is to step up and have a go at the Aussies; they have two arms and two legs just like you (and sometimes not the same brain capacity). Soon after that Georgia Hind and Samantha will be representing NZ at the World Surf Lifesaving Championships in Taiwan. I'm sure that all of your additional training will see you fit and fast for this major championship. During the school holidays we will be training at Freyberg on the Monday morning sessions (6th and 13th) at 5:45-7:30, not at Thorndon. Keep up the great training! It appears to me that Thorndon training has stimulated you all with it's variety of distance and environment. Train hard over the next few months and reach your target times. Fast swimming, Gary
