Our Coaches

Gary Hollywood joined Capital Swim Club in April 2016 as Head Coach bringing with him more than 30 years of coaching experience. Gary’s swimmers have competed at Olympic Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, World University Games, Pan Pacific Championships, Oceania Championships, Youth Olympics, Commonwealth Youth Games, and Pacific School Games. Gary attributes much of his success to the coaches’ associations of Australia and America, and to his mentors Bill Sweetenham, Istvan Bayli, Rick Bailey and Doug Frost. Gary is the first International Fellow to come out of the American Swimming and Coaches Association leadership programme of which he is an International Life Member and is the current Swimming NZ coach of the  year.


Aidan Withington joined Capital Swim Club in June 2016 bringing more than 10 years of coaching experience. In 2005 Aidan was hired as the first ever Southland development officer working with schools and swim clubs within the Southland region. He increased swimmer numbers, and his swimmers won junior and national age group titles.  In 2010 Aidan moved to Central Hawkes Bay where he was head coach for 6 years, coaching swimmers to national age and open titles. Aidan coaches Capital’s Youth groups.



Craig Elliot grew up swimming for Cockermouth Swimming Club in Cumbria England.  From there he moved to Loughborough University and studied a BSc in Sports Science and Management. He swam for Great Britain and was a British age group record holder. Craig turned his hand to teaching and coaching in a learn to swim start up in 2013.  In 2015 he moved to New Zealand and settled in Wellington. Shortly after moving to Wellington he was hired as a senior instructor at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre to develop the school age and advanced learn to swim programs. Craig joined Capital Swim Club in June 2016 and coaches Capital’s Junior groups.

Swimmers selected for NZ Team

Congratulations to Sam Brown who achieved automatic selection to the NZ team that will attend Australian State Teams Championships in his 400IM performance at the National Age Groups Championships. Congratulations to the following swimmers who have been invited to the Australian State Teams Championships selection camp 17th to 21st May. Good luck to you all.

Capital Club Night: September 19th

Capital club nights will occur on the 2nd last Thursday of each school term. This is a great opportunity for Capital swimmers to experience the racing environment in a comfortable, supported atmosphere.

Our next Club Night is Thursday September 19th!
